Matchday 2(Part 2)

Matchday 2(or Matchday 2.5) went mostly according to plan. The big shock was that Chelsea drew 0-0 with CFR Cluj as Drogba was taken off the field injured. Chelsea are currently missing Carvalho, Joe Cole, Michael Essien and Deco. Drogba will be missed, and with so many players being sold in the off season question's will be asked about Chelsea's depth. Chelsea will be happy to return from Transylvania with all their blood. Roma defeated Bordeaux 3-1 to get back on track. The French side took the early lead, but Roma came back on a goal by Vucinic and a brace by Baptista. Bordeaux look dead and buried, while Cluj are the undead(clever). If they can get points from both games against Bordeaux, while Roma has to contend with Chelsea, they could even make it out of the knockout stages.

Anorthosis Famagusta defeated Panathinaikos 3-1 is an upset. The Cypriot champions defeated their Greek neighbors(water, but still a neighbor) for their first Champions League win. It puts them in a tie at the top of Group B, after Inter Milan tied Werder Bremen 1-1. Pizarro equalized for the Germans against his former coach, and Ibrahimovic couldn't deliver the win for Inter. Much will depend on Werder's games against Panathinaikos, as I don't think Anorthosis will be able to get more than a point from their next two against Inter.

Barcelona defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in Ukraine, thanks to two late goals by Messi. The late goals were very disappointing for Shakhtar, who thought they had all 3 points and top of the group within their reach. Sporting Lisbon defeated FC Basel 2-0 to move into second. Basel are terrible and will be happy to win a single game, though Sporting did not look great. It looks like they'll have a fight on their hands with Shakhtar for second place. Barcelona needs to raise their game. Their domestic form has been terrible, and many expected them to challenge in the Champions League this season. Individual players like Messi and Henry can win them games, but they'll need to work together much better if they want any silverware.

Liverpool defeated PSV Eindhoven 3-1 at Anfield. Kuyt opened up the scoring against his countrymen, Keane broke his duck, and Gerrard grabbed his 100th for the club. PSV have really underperformed and don't look like they will progress. Atletico Madrid defeated Marseille 2-1. Aguerro scored another to continue his tear. Madrid now have two games against Liverpool, and if one side gets the majority of the points look for them to win the group. PSV will need a double over Marseille if they have any hopes of progressing, but it's hard to believe they could do that right now.
